Do You Need to File a Tax Return?
Most employees paid under PAYE do not need to file a Self Assessment tax return because tax is already deducted from your wages or salary by your employer
However, there are specific situations where you may still be required to complete a Self Assessment tax return in the UK. Here are some common scenarios:
- If you or your partner’s adjusted net income is over £50,000 and either of you received Child Benefit, you may need to file a return to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
- Earning more than £100,000 from employment in a tax year automatically requires you to file a Self Assessment—even if all your income is taxed at source via PAYE.
- If you wish to claim tax relief on work expenses above £2,500, or on charitable donations, pension contributions, or investments.
- Company directors (excluding non-active directors) or those who receive dividends or other untaxed income may need to file.
- If you have foreign income (even below £1,000) or need to claim the remittance basis, you may need to notify HMRC and complete a tax return.
